IBT Women's Conference

The 2008 IBT Women's Conference was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida September 10th to the 15th. Sisters Audrey Iversen (Edmonton Office), Pam Lacey (Calgary Office), Yvonne Bruyere (Grimshaw Edmonton), Sue L'Archeveque (Garda Calgary), Michelle Glubrecht (Business Agent) and Brother Al Porter (President) were in attendance on behalf of General Teamsters, Local Union No. 362.

A main focus of the conference was the upcoming US election in November. "Teamsters for Obama" stickers, pins and shirts were everywhere and the call to "get out and vote" was heard during every General Session and Seminar. Other seminar topics included Organizing, Women's Health Issues, Retirement Issues and Women in non-traditional roles in the workplace, to name a few.

A great time was had by all. Over 880 participants took part in this year's Women's Conference, with 75 Canadian Sisters in attendance......the largest Canadian contingent to date. Next year's Conference is set to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada September 9th through the 13th, 2009.

On Sunday October 5, 2008, 26 Teamsters, family and friends participated in the annual CIBC Run for the Cure. Teamsters LU 362 team raised a little over $4700.00 in donations. Brother Rick Bergman (CFL Calgary) and Jill Atkins (daughter of Brother Tony Atkins, Edmonton) were our top donation earners. A great time was had by all and the talk of the day was focused on participating in next years Run. A new Team name has already been selected (Teamsters Hi-Beams) and our goal will be to not only increase our donation amount, but also increase the number our National Team participants in Calgary and Edmonton and possibly by encouraging members to participate at the Fort McMurray Run location. Next years run is slated for Sunday, October 4, 2009 – Mark your calendars!
